Acclaimed filmmaker Mike Mills (Beginners) brings us a richly, multi-layered, humorous and heart-stirring portrait of three remarkable women played by Annette Bening, Greta Gerwig and Elle Fanning.
Set in California in the summer of 1979, the film centres on Dorothea (Bening), a single mum who is raising her teenage son, Jamie (Zumann), at a moment brimming with cultural change and rebellion. To help guide him through life, she enlists the help of the two women in their lives; Abbie (Gerwig), a free-spirited, punk-loving photographer living as a boarder in Dorothea’s home; and Jamie’s crush Julie (Fanning), a savvy and provocative teen. Based on the real-life women who have inspired Mills, 20th Century Women is a poignant love letter to the people who raise us and the times that shape us, showcasing the director’s unique visual style, a terrific soundtrack and three beautifully realised leads played by Annette Bening, Greta Gerwig and Elle Fanning.
“A poignant reflection of life's joys and sorrows with a smartly written script from director Mike Mills and an understanding of the scary, wonderful things that happen to everyone as they grow up and older.” Daily Express
“I loved the film” The Observer
“An insightful and, on occasion, laugh-out-loud piece of filmmaking. Artfully shot and structured, while its warmth and wit shine as brightly as the Californian sun.” Empire
